1994 Rugby World Cup Winner Now Leads England School

A woman who helped England win the 1994 Women's Rugby World Cup has just stepped into her first role as a school headteacher, bringing the same drive that made her a champion to her new classroom.

Annie Cole defeated the USA in the World Cup final at Edinburgh's Raeburn Place over 30 years ago. This September, she took the helm at Braywood CE First School in Oakley Green, fulfilling a dream she's carried for nearly two decades.

"I've always wanted to be a teacher," Cole said. "I love seeing children grow, learn, and develop that same love for learning that I've always had."

Her path to education wasn't straightforward. Before teaching, Cole earned a degree in Applied Chemistry and worked in the industry while still playing rugby. She balanced chemistry labs with rugby pitches, making time for both her career and the sport she loved.

Cole discovered rugby after trying multiple sports as a child. A local club invited her to give it a shot, and she got hooked immediately. That single invitation turned into a 20-year career representing top clubs including Saracens and Henley.

"Winning the World Cup was an amazing achievement," she said. "It was a real privilege to play, travel, and be part of such an incredible sport."
