The celebration followed a week of heightened concern after about 200 people were arrested during Finals week for various incidents including brawling and property damage. City officials braced for the worst, implementing extensive security measures throughout Lower Manhattan.

But New Yorkers showed up ready to celebrate, not cause problems. The massive crowd dispersed Thursday evening with what police called "minimal commotion."

The parade followed the traditional Canyon of Heroes route from Bowling Green to City Hall. Mayor Zorhan Mamdani announced the celebration immediately after the Knicks' comeback victory against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.

Police closed subway stations south of Canal Street to ease crowding, reopening them shortly after the festivities ended. The careful planning helped keep the enormous gathering safe and manageable.
