When SeaWorld San Diego's rescue team found the first fur seal pup on January 3, she weighed less than a small dog and could barely lift her head. Nine days later, they got a call about another pup in the same desperate condition.
Both young female Guadalupe fur seals were critically underweight, dehydrated, and so weak they seemed lifeless. The endangered animals, normally found near Mexico's Guadalupe Island, had somehow ended up stranded on California beaches far from home.
SeaWorld's team immediately brought both pups to their rescue center, one of only two facilities in the region equipped to rehabilitate this threatened species. The pups received multiple daily feedings and round the clock monitoring in a safe space where they could rest, swim, and slowly rebuild their strength.

These two young seals will eventually return to the ocean, stronger and healthier than when rescuers first found them gasping on the sand.
