20-Year-Old Chess Star Earns Shot at World Champion Title

A chess prodigy from Uzbekistan just earned the chance of a lifetime, and he did it in record-breaking style.

Javokhir Sindarov, just 20 years old, secured his spot to challenge for the World Chess Championship after winning the Candidates Tournament in Cyprus this week. Despite entering as the fourth-ranked player out of eight competitors, Sindarov remained unbeaten through the entire tournament, clinching victory with one round still to play.

His six wins mark a new record for the tournament since it adopted its current format in 2013. As the world's number 11 player, Sindarov surprised many observers with his dominant performance, though his 2025 World Cup victory hinted at his rising talent.

Later this year, Sindarov will face defending champion Gukesh Dommaraju of India in a best-of-14 match for the sport's highest honor. If successful, he would become Uzbekistan's first world champion in over two decades, following Rustam Kasimdzhanov's 2004 victory.

Sindarov's achievement reflects Uzbekistan's growing chess powerhouse status. The Central Asian nation won gold at the 2022 Chess Olympiad and boasts multiple top-ranked players, including world number four Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who won the 2021 World Rapid Championship at just 17 years old.

His success also represents a generational shift in chess. While legendary champion Magnus Carlsen stepped away from defending his title in 2023 due to lack of motivation, young stars like Sindarov are bringing fresh energy to the game's highest levels.

The upcoming championship pits youth against youth, as Gukesh became the youngest world champion in history when he won the title at 18 in 2024. Though Gukesh has struggled with form recently, the matchup promises an exciting clash between two of chess's brightest rising stars.
