200-Acre Indian Lake Gets $600K Revival After Years of Neglect

A massive lake that once sustained farming communities outside Chennai is getting a second chance at life, thanks to a $600,000 restoration project that could protect entire neighborhoods from flooding.

The Thiruneermalai Periya Eri spans nearly 200 acres in the Tambaram region. For years, it served as a lifeline for local farmers, but decades of sewage dumping, garbage accumulation, and illegal encroachments turned the water body into an environmental hazard.

Now, the Water Resources Department is moving fast to bring it back. Workers are removing tons of sludge, strengthening the banks, and repairing flood control systems. The initial funding from the state government is making it all possible.

One of the biggest challenges has been clearing prosopis juliflora, an invasive tree species that spread across the lake's edges. The dense growth and deep root systems made removal difficult, but crews are pushing through. Officials expect the core restoration work to finish by March.

The Ripple Effect

The transformation goes beyond just cleaning up one lake. Local environmental groups and resident associations fought for years to save Periya Eri, watching it deteriorate while surrounding areas flooded during monsoons.

The restored lake will recharge groundwater supplies across the region, giving wells and aquifers a much-needed boost. "We hope the restoration will help spare residential localities from flooding during the next monsoon," said V. Santhanam, a longtime community activist who campaigned for the project.

Future plans include walking paths, lighting, and even boating facilities to turn the lake into a community gathering space. A nature island designed specifically for birds will sit at the lake's center, creating habitat for local and migratory species.

Local representatives want to develop it into an eco-friendly leisure destination comparable to the successful Chitlapakkam Lake restoration. Additional funding for amenities is already being considered through local development programs.

The project shows what happens when communities refuse to give up on their natural resources. Years of advocacy by groups like the Tiruneermalai Periya Eri Pathukappu Kuzhu finally convinced officials that this lake was worth saving, and now an entire region will benefit from cleaner water, fewer floods, and a beautiful public space where garbage once piled up.
