High school students collaborating on innovation project with mentor at educational summit

200 Indiana Students to Join Free Innovation Summit in May

🤯 Mind Blown

Purdue Northwest is hosting a free day-long innovation experience for high school students after teachers said kids need more hands-on learning with real innovators. The SPARK Summit will bring former IndyCar driver Charlie Kimball and youth entrepreneurs to inspire 200 students on May 4.

High school students across Northwest Indiana will get a front-row seat to innovation when Purdue University Northwest hosts the SPARK Summit, a free all-day experience designed to turn curiosity into action.

More than 200 students will gather at PNW's Westville campus on May 4 for hands-on learning with real innovators, including former IndyCar driver Charlie Kimball, youth entrepreneur Olivia West, and creativity expert Matthew Jones. The summit responds directly to what teachers have been asking for: more chances for students to learn innovation through human connection, not just textbooks.

"What we heard clearly from teachers is that students need opportunities to engage with real people, real problems and different perspectives," said Jason Williams, CEO of the Society of Innovators. Teachers told organizers that students learn best when innovation feels collaborative and connected to the world around them.

The day will be led by Faith Spencer and Emmani Ellis, co-founders of IronWorkz, who will guide students through interactive activities that turn inspiration into practical skills. Jones will use certified LEGO SERIOUS PLAY methods to unlock creativity and help students think differently about problem solving.

The summit is intentionally kept small to preserve meaningful interactions between students, educators, and community leaders. Community sponsors fund the entire experience, covering meals, materials, and programming so schools pay nothing.

Table sponsors sit with students throughout the day, creating natural opportunities for career conversations and mentorship. These connections give students access to professionals they might never meet otherwise, opening doors to future possibilities.

The Ripple Effect: The SPARK Summit is part of a larger SparkED initiative that includes classroom video lessons and educator resources. By bringing innovation education directly into Northwest Indiana schools, the program helps students build confidence and skills they can use in any career path they choose.

The approach challenges the idea that innovation happens in isolation. Instead, it invites students into rooms where ideas connect, collaboration happens naturally, and entrepreneurship becomes something they can actually practice.

Schools interested in bringing students can contact the Society of Innovators at societyofinnovators@pnw.edu or call Jason Williams at 219-228-4718. Community members can sponsor tables to support local students while participating in the experience themselves.

Innovation education is finally meeting students where they are, with real people and real conversations that make the future feel possible.
