2,000 Gather at Dartmouth for World Cup Watch Party

When Spain and Argentina faced off in the World Cup final, 2,000 people chose community over their couch.

Dartmouth College's Green transformed into an outdoor stadium on July 19 as fans from across the Upper Valley gathered to watch the thrilling match on a giant screen. Spain claimed victory with a 1-0 win in extra time, thanks to a 106th-minute goal that had half the crowd cheering and the other half groaning.

The watch party drew students, families, and visitors who could have easily watched from home but chose something better. Justin Schafer drove from Ohio with his two sons specifically for the event. "You wait for this every four years. It is the pinnacle of the sport," he said.

Student Anagh Shukla, who came from India where cricket dominates, found something special in the gathering. "Soccer really is a global sport. All you need is a ball. That's something about it that really unites people from everywhere," he explained.

The game itself delivered drama worthy of the world stage. Argentina's goalkeeper set a World Cup final record with 11 saves, keeping his team alive for 106 minutes before Spain finally broke through. When the final whistle blew after 120 intense minutes, the entire Green rose in applause regardless of which team they'd supported.

The Ripple Effect

The event required collaboration between six campus offices, from securing permits to funding the massive screen and sound system. But organizers saw it as more than just logistics.

"Sports bring people together across differences," said Dawn Carey of the Dickey Center for International Understanding. "Soccer is one of those cultural standards across countries that everybody can get behind."

Director Jazmine Gittens-Roberts emphasized the power of shared space. "Even if you aren't rooting for the same team, you're sharing space together," she said.

After the match, the celebration continued with an outdoor concert featuring folk artist Rhiannon Giddens, extending the day's theme of cultural connection. Hopkins Center director Johanna Evans called the turnout and atmosphere "inspiring," adding that "now is the time to celebrate internationalism."

Local resident Adam Harder, sporting his Spain jersey, summed up the day simply: "I thought this World Cup brought people together in our country in a wonderful way."

Organizers are already hoping to bring similar global celebrations back to the Green, proving that sometimes the best way to watch the world's biggest game is surrounded by your neighbors.
