Faith Restored

When 21 relatives returned to their ancestral home in Lithuania after nearly 90 years, the current owner welcomed them with open arms. Their heartwarming journey inspired a London exhibition celebrating the rich history of Lithuanian Jewish life.

Approaching their ancestral home in Lithuania nearly 90 years after their family fled, 21 relatives braced for the unknown. Instead of closed doors, the current owner greeted them with a bright smile and asked what had taken them so long.

The Jawschitz family had journeyed to Smiltynė to visit Villa Sophie, a seaside retreat built by their great-grandfather Feivel. Before the outbreak of World War II, this Baltic sanctuary offered idyllic summers of sunshine and laughter for 13 cousins roaming the sandy dunes.

London resident Dani Jaff Klein walked up the villa steps unsure of what reaction awaited her family. Current owner Professor Inga Dailidienė dissolved their fears immediately, embracing the travelers and announcing plans to restore the house to its original historic name.

Deeply moved by the encounter, Klein partnered with her 20-year-old cousin Leila Kuper to transform their family archives into an inspiring public tribute. Together, they curated Litvak Life, a new exhibition at London's JW3 community center that brings pre-war Baltic Jewish culture back to light.

Rather than focusing solely on loss, the free display highlights the joyous music, scholarship, and everyday moments of Lithuanian families. Visitors can explore personal letters, treasured photo albums, and heartwarming memoirs that showcase the enduring spirit of this community.

By giving faces and names to the past, the exhibition reminds guests of the deep cultural contributions that shaped modern communities worldwide. It transforms a private family pilgrimage into an educational triumph for all generations.

Why This Inspires

Generosity and empathy can bridge decades of distance in a single afternoon. When a homeowner chooses to honor the past with compassion, an entire family can finally heal and reclaim their heritage.

True home is never lost when people keep the doors of memory open for one another.
