Young runner Sam Fetters celebrates completing Tokyo Marathon with medal and smile

21-Year-Old Runs 6 World Marathons Under 3 Hours Each

🦸 Hero Alert

Sam Fetters from Martha's Vineyard became the youngest person ever to complete all six major world marathons with every race finished in under three hours. His journey started not with dreams of records, but as a quest to overcome mental health struggles and find purpose.

When Sam Fetters crossed the finish line at the Tokyo Marathon in February, he had no idea he'd just made history. The 21-year-old from Martha's Vineyard had become the youngest person ever to complete all six Abbott World Marathon Majors with every single race under three hours.

But breaking records was never the point. Three years ago, struggling with his mental health during his freshman year at Amherst College, Fetters designed what he called "Operation Globetrotter" as a personal challenge to rebuild his confidence and discover who he really was.

"The reason I did all this was to really try to grow as a person, to get to know myself a bit more, and build more self-confidence and self-love that I was really lacking," Fetters explained. He chose marathons because the goal seemed impossible for someone his age, and he wanted to prove to himself that he could achieve it.

Starting in 2023, Fetters methodically ran eight marathons across the globe, including Boston, Berlin, London, Chicago, New York, and Tokyo. Each race required extensive fundraising and logistical planning. Along the way, he raised over $8,000 for Autism Speaks, the largest autism nonprofit research organization in the United States.

The West Tisbury resident credits his Martha's Vineyard community for making the achievement possible. The Amity Island Running Club became his training home, and his high school cross country coaches provided the foundation for his running skills. When he needed financial support to travel internationally, his community stepped up.

Why This Inspires

Fetters wants other young people facing mental health challenges to know they're not alone. His message is simple but powerful: find something that gives you meaning, whether it's running, music, art, or any passion that makes you feel alive.

"Those mental health challenges may not go away, but they may get a little easier, and a little easier could be all the difference," he said. Running transformed from a goal into an engine that empowered every part of his life.

Now back on Martha's Vineyard, Fetters plans to keep running, including returning to the Marine Corps Marathon in October. He recently appeared as a celebrity runner at the MV Winter Classic 20-miler, inspiring the next generation of Island athletes.

The world record holder remains humble about his achievement, focusing instead on what running taught him about teamwork within himself and the power of community support in achieving seemingly impossible dreams.
