22-Year-Old Brings Shade to 264 Street Vendors in Lucknow

Street vendors in Lucknow face an impossible choice every summer: work under dangerous heat or lose the income their families depend on. Khushi Pandey, just 22 years old, decided nobody should have to make that choice.

Through her organization Sapno Ki Udaan Foundation, she launched Project Chhanv to give roadside workers something most people take for granted: shade. The initiative distributes large umbrellas to vendors who spend entire days exposed to relentless sun while selling fruits, vegetables, snacks, and household items.

So far, the project has reached 264 vendors across the city. Each umbrella costs about $11 USD and provides protection that goes beyond physical comfort.

For workers who can't step away from their spot on the roadside, these umbrellas mean the difference between enduring hazardous conditions and working with dignity. They allow vendors to continue earning without risking heat exhaustion or worse during India's increasingly severe summers.

The idea came from simply watching what was happening around her. While heatwaves dominated news headlines with statistics and forecasts, Pandey saw real people suffering just outside her door.
