22-Year-Old Turns Garage Into Bedroom for Her Grandparents

Sofia Palacios wanted her grandparents to feel at home, so she gave up her bedroom for them.

The 22-year-old student and real estate agent from San Diego made an unusual decision when her family bought a new house in January. Instead of claiming one of the four bedrooms, she transformed the detached garage into her own apartment.

Her motivation was simple. Palacios' grandparents visit often, and she wanted them to have a dedicated space in the main house.

"We really wanted them to be able to come and visit and stay with us as much as possible," Palacios told Business Insider. The garage already had electricity and a fan installed, making the conversion easier than expected.

Palacios divided the garage into two distinct zones. One half serves as her bedroom, with her bed positioned near the doorway for easy access to the main house. The other half functions as an art studio and study space, filled with natural light from a glass-paned door leading to the patio.

The setup isn't without its challenges. The garage has a sink but no bathroom or kitchen, so Palacios walks to the main house for those necessities. She admits the late-night bathroom trips through the dark alley can be "annoying."

But the inconveniences pale in comparison to the rewards. Palacios lives with her parents and two sisters, and their bond remains incredibly strong. All three daughters still live at home by choice, cherishing the closeness with their parents.

The glass door opens directly to the backyard, giving Palacios easy outdoor access. She paints in the corner with natural light streaming in, studies at her desk under the only window, and stores her pottery supplies in built-in cabinets.

Her sacrifice means her grandparents now have their own comfortable bedroom waiting whenever they visit. For Palacios, that trade-off was worth every late-night walk to the bathroom.
