24-Year-Old Breaks 53-Minute Barrier in Hyrox World Record

A 24-year-old athlete just shattered one of fitness racing's most elusive barriers, and his victory carries a powerful personal meaning that goes far beyond the clock.

Hidde Weersma set a new Hyrox world record at Olympia London, finishing in 52:42 and becoming the first person to break the 53-minute mark in the grueling competition. The race combines eight 1-kilometer runs with eight different workout stations, testing every aspect of fitness from rowing to wall balls.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable? This was only Weersma's third Elite 15 race. He beat a field that included reigning world champion Tim Wenisch, claiming both the world record and the 2026 Hyrox EMEA championship title in one stunning performance.

Weersma maintained a blistering running pace of 3:45 per kilometer while powering through challenges like a 50-meter sled push, 80-meter burpee broad jump, and 100 wall balls. He spent just 22 minutes and 49 seconds total on all eight workout stations.

The race came down to the final moments. Wenisch briefly took the lead on the last run and finished his wall balls first, but he had 30 seconds of penalties to serve. That gave Weersma the opening he needed to cross the line first and make history.

Why This Inspires

After crossing the finish line, Weersma shared that his father passed away last November. In the weeks before his death, his father told him how proud he was and that he knew Weersma would go far in the sport.

"To win my first elite race, to do this, it means so much," Weersma said through tears. "And I just miss him." The young athlete carried his father's belief with him through every kilometer and every station.
