285 People Set Donut Dunking Record on Pikes Peak

What do you need to set a world record? An official judge, hundreds of eager participants, and apparently, a whole lot of donuts.

On Colorado Day, 285 people gathered at the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center to make history in the most delicious way possible. Their mission: break the Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous donut dunk.

"My name is Hannah Ortman, and I am an official Guinness World Records Adjudicator," the woman in the blue suit announced to cheers from the crowd. After nearly an hour of introductions and registration, the eager dunkers were ready to begin.

The attempt celebrated Colorado's 150th birthday, said Mackenzie Carder, marketing director for Pikes Peak America's Mountain. They needed at least 250 participants to create a new record.

As people filed into the participant area, they clutched commemorative cups of cold-brew coffee and golden-brown donuts smelling of nutmeg. The donuts are made using a special recipe developed over a century ago to work in the thin air at over 14,000 feet.

Some wore donut-shaped sunglasses while a human-size version of the official visitor center mascot, The Donut Ranger, patrolled the area. Participants packed in shoulder to shoulder at plastic picnic tables, divided into color-coded sections with official witnesses.

"I guess we're going to become really good friends, everybody," joked one person as they squeezed together. "Go blue table!" shouted participants in the blue section, their team camaraderie growing with each passing minute.

After Ortman's final readiness check and a count of three, the dunking began. A brief moment of silence fell over the crowd, followed by collective sounds of satisfaction as nearly 300 people bit into their donuts at once.

The Ripple Effect

This quirky celebration shows how communities can come together to create joy from simple moments. The event didn't just set a record. It gave hundreds of people a shared memory of laughter, anticipation, and connection on top of one of Colorado's most iconic mountains.

The donuts were no longer hot after sitting for hours, but they were still delicious. Witnesses encouraged spectators to take extras home, some leaving with dozens wrapped in napkins and bags.

The official Guinness World Record for most people simultaneously dunking donuts now stands at 285, a sweet reminder that breaking records doesn't always require extreme feats of strength or endurance.
