Flames roared inside a multi-level training building in Kingsport this week as 30 future firefighters proved they're ready to save lives. The trainees battled real fires, conducted search and rescue missions, and climbed ladders as part of a regional training academy that's preparing the next generation of first responders.

The Northeast Tennessee Regional Fire Training Association Rookie School brings together aspiring firefighters from 10 departments across the region twice a year. Trainees from Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol, Elizabethton, Greeneville, Morristown, Erwin, Cocke County, Newport, and Jonesborough spent Tuesday practicing the exact skills they'll use on the job.

"They actually make entry into a structure, extinguish the fire, and do search and rescue," said Wes Jennings, assistant chief of the training division for the Kingsport Fire Department. "They do the job that they're going to be doing, obviously, in a training environment."

The 12-week academy runs twice annually, with spring sessions from February through April and fall sessions from August through November. The Kingsport and Greeneville Training Divisions coordinate the program together, sharing resources and expertise across department lines.

Kingsport's training facility on Horsecreek Lane offers everything firefighters need to learn their craft. The property includes a Class A burn structure where trainees can practice fighting fires in realistic conditions without the unpredictability of actual emergencies.

The Ripple Effect

Regional cooperation makes everyone safer. When departments train together, firefighters learn to work seamlessly with neighboring teams during mutual aid calls and large-scale emergencies. The trainees also build relationships that last throughout their careers, creating a network of professionals who can rely on each other.

This collaborative approach means smaller departments can offer the same high-quality training as larger ones. A firefighter in Jonesborough gets the same rigorous preparation as one in Johnson City, ensuring consistent standards across the region.

By investing 12 weeks in intensive training, these departments are building a stronger safety net for their communities. Every trainee who graduates represents another skilled professional ready to respond when seconds count.
