32 Graduates with Disabilities Launch Hospitality Careers

Thirty-two students with special educational needs just proved that the right support can unlock extraordinary careers in hospitality.

Aurora Foxes Hospitality and Catering College in Minehead held its graduation ceremony at Butlin's resort, where more than 300 students, teachers, family members and friends gathered to celebrate. The college specializes in training young people with disabilities and operates a fully working hotel on the Esplanade where students gain hands-on experience.

Principal Mark Costello reminded everyone that success looks different for each student. "The success of our students is built on thousands of moments that often go unseen, like catching a bus independently for the first time or finding the confidence to answer the phone," he said. "When I look across this stage today, I don't see perfection. I see progress."

That progress is translating into real employment. Graduate Hannah worked at DoubleTree by Hilton at Manchester Airport during Easter, handling front of house and room service. The hotel didn't just thank her for her time. They offered her a permanent job.

"After Easter, Hilton contacted me to offer me a job," Hannah said. "That meant everything to me."

The Ripple Effect

Hannah's story isn't unique. Aurora Foxes has partnered with Hilton for over a decade, placing more than 100 students in work experiences across Hilton hotels throughout the UK. Three graduates currently work at Hilton London Kensington alone.

Esther Brittan, Hilton's HR operations manager for UK and Ireland, spoke at the ceremony about what these partnerships mean. "You are helping create a future where more people can see what's possible," she told the graduates. "Hilton is proud of you and grateful to be part of your journey."

The celebration also honored Maureen Tyler-Moore, who founded Foxes and passed away in December. "The college we know today exists because of her courage, determination and vision," Costello said.

Students received special awards during the ceremony, including the Waldorf Hilton Award for Service Excellence and recognition for culinary achievement.

These graduates are reshaping what the hospitality industry considers possible, one confident phone call and bus ride at a time.
