3,400 Youths in Northern Nigeria Gain Vital Job Skills
Thousands of ambitious young people across northern Nigeria are stepping into brighter futures through a major new skills initiative. Backed by UNICEF and the European Union, the project equips 3,400 youths with green, tech, and vocational training.
Thousands of young dreams are turning into real opportunities across northern Nigeria this week. A groundbreaking skills initiative is opening vibrant career paths for 3,400 young people eager to build sustainable futures.
The Youth Employability and Skills Project officially kicked off induction sessions in Kano to prepare participants for the modern workforce. UNICEF and the European Union fund the initiative, while Yaba College of Technology and Nigeria's Industrial Training Fund lead the hands-on instruction.
Spread across 30 local communities in Kano, Jigawa, and Sokoto states, the program provides comprehensive training in digital technology, green industries, and vocational trades. Trainees also earn credentials through the National Skills Qualification framework, ensuring their new abilities carry recognized value in the job market.
Organizers intentionally prioritized young women and vulnerable jobseekers who frequently encounter the steepest barriers to formal employment. Project coordinator Dr. Funmilayo Doherty noted that Nigeria's rising generation represents its greatest economic asset when equipped with relevant, market-ready capabilities.

UNICEF representative Shafeeq Ur Rehman celebrated the initiative as a collective investment in youth as primary drivers of innovation and community development. Local employers and industry leaders are joining the mission by offering internships, apprenticeships, and direct pathways into steady work.
This rollout marks just the beginning of a much wider campaign, as Yaba College of Technology aims to train 18,000 young people across the country. Every new workshop and mentorship opportunity helps transform local potential into lasting self-reliance.
The Ripple Effect
When young adults gain practical, marketable skills, the benefits immediately spread beyond their own households. These trainees return to their neighborhoods as qualified technicians, digital specialists, and entrepreneurs who can launch small businesses and hire others.
Strengthening local talent fuels community resilience and lays the foundation for sustainable economic progress across the entire region.
With practical tools in hand and strong mentors by their side, thousands of young Nigerians are stepping forward to build a thriving future.
