35-Year Engagement Ends in Surprise Wedding at 60th Birthday
Alexandra Stewart and Robert Sharp turned a birthday party into a wedding after 35 years of engagement. Their guests arrived expecting cake and balloons but witnessed vows instead.
Imagine walking into what you think is a 60th birthday party only to find your friend standing in a wedding gown at the altar.
That's exactly what happened when Alexandra Stewart and Robert Sharp decided to finally tie the knot after 35 years of engagement. The Scottish couple sent invitations for Stewart's 60th birthday celebration, but when guests arrived at The River Inn in Renfrewshire on April 4, they discovered a fully decorated wedding ceremony waiting for them.
The couple, together for 37 years, had simply never gotten around to getting married. But when they realized both sides of their family would be in town for Stewart's birthday, they saw their chance.
Guest reactions, captured in a viral video with 45,000 Instagram likes, ranged from gasps to dropped jaws. Stewart's friend Barbara Sloey actually hesitated to enter the venue, convinced she was in the wrong place.
"I'm not dressed for a wedding. Sandra, I can't believe it! I've got trainers on! Look at me!" Sloey exclaimed in the video. But the couple didn't care about dress codes or fancy attire.

Stewart and Sharp say removing the stress of finding the perfect outfit was part of their plan all along. Stewart herself nearly couldn't find a dress until Sharp drove her 100 miles to a different bridal shop.
"I tried the dress on and it was what I was looking for, and it fit," Stewart says. "In and out the dress shop in 15 minutes."
Sunny's Take
After the ceremony, the celebration continued with what guests are still calling an amazing carvery dinner. Friend Nikki Peacock stepped in to bake a three-tiered wedding cake on short notice when local bakers said they couldn't help.
Sharp even performed with his band, Unison Anthems, during the reception. The groom in a tan suit and the bride in a white V-neck gown danced alongside guests who showed up in everything from formal wear to sneakers.
The mix of casual clothes and formal vows perfectly captured what the couple wanted: a celebration about love, not logistics. Sometimes the best parties are the ones you didn't see coming.
