37-Year-Old Sloth Becomes One of Oldest Moms Ever

When Grizzly the sloth slowly climbed toward her mate Teddy with their newborn baby, the dad was too busy munching on leaves to notice at first. But once he spotted his tiny cub, the sweet nose nuzzles began.

St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park in Florida shared the adorable family reunion in February 2022, delighting thousands of viewers. The birth of this healthy baby sloth marked something truly special for the zoo and the animal world.

Grizzly was 37 years old when she gave birth, making her one of the oldest sloths ever to become a mother. Teddy, at 47, holds the distinction of being one of the oldest sloths ever recorded. After carrying her baby for an entire year (a sloth's typical gestational period), Grizzly welcomed her fourth child with Teddy.

The zoo did something unusual by letting Teddy stay involved in raising their baby. Male sloths typically don't help raise their young, and mothers usually spend about six months with the baby clinging to their chest while navigating trees. But the curators noticed this sloth couple preferred staying together.

"Since that is how they've elected to, we felt it was really important to keep them here that way," a zoo curator explained. Teddy showed remarkable awareness by giving Grizzly and the baby their much needed space when bonding time was crucial.

The sloth family lives at an exhibit called Sloth Landing, where visitors can meet them up close while learning about rainforest conservation. Grizzly and Teddy moved to St. Augustine from Busch Gardens Tampa Bay in 2019.
