39 Pupils and 5 Teachers Rescued in Nigeria Operation

Thirty-nine students and five teachers are safely recovering today after being rescued from kidnappers in Oyo State, Nigeria, bringing relief to families who had been praying for their return.

Governor Seyi Makinde visited the rescued victims Saturday at the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services in Ibadan, where they're receiving medical care following their release from captivity. The students and teachers, abducted from Oriire Local Government Area, will remain under observation for 48 hours before being formally handed over to their families.

"Today is a day of gratitude to Almighty God," Governor Makinde said during his visit. "This is indeed a huge relief, not only for their families but for every resident of Oyo State who has been praying and hoping for this day."

The governor praised the Nigerian Army and security agencies for their courage and professionalism throughout the rescue operation. Their coordinated effort brought all the victims home alive, though the mission came at a cost—some security personnel lost their lives during the operation.

While the rescued students and teachers are happy to be free, many show signs of physical exhaustion and will need comprehensive medical care and counseling. One young girl has been repeatedly asking to see her mother since her rescue, and officials are arranging family visits in a controlled environment that supports the recovery process.

Medical teams are monitoring the victims closely before they return home. The military recommended the 48-hour observation period to properly assess their physical and psychological needs and ensure they receive appropriate care.
