4 Beluga Whales Rescued From Abusive Park Arrive in Chicago

Four female beluga whales just got the fresh start they desperately needed.

After years trapped at Marineland in Ontario, where they suffered through what experts call one of the worst cases of institutional animal abuse in the Western world, the belugas touched down at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium this week. Their journey involved cold water tanks, a Boeing 777 cargo plane, and dozens of people working together to pull off the impossible.

The rescue photos tell an incredible story. Workers carefully lifted each multi-ton whale from holding pools using special cloth gurneys, then used cranes to lower them into temperature-controlled water containers. From there, the belugas traveled by truck and plane from Ontario to O'Hare Airport, finally arriving at the Abbott Oceanarium.

"Moving animals like beluga whales, even under the best of circumstances, is challenging," said Dan Ashe, president of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which organized the complex operation. But challenging doesn't mean impossible.

These four females, aged 27, 26, and 21, had bonded into what experts call a "sub pod" at Marineland. Keeping them together made the transfer decision easy. Now they're undergoing health checks and slowly adjusting to their new home, where veterinary teams are monitoring every meal and social interaction.

The rescue happened just in time. Ontario finally shut down Marineland after decades of investigations and court cases. With no money left to care for the animals, the park's owners even threatened to euthanize the belugas if permits weren't approved quickly. Previous attempts to send them to China had already failed.

The Ripple Effect

This rescue opens the door for 24 more belugas still waiting at Marineland. U.S. authorities have approved permits to move 28 whales total to four American aquariums, while Spain prepares to welcome two more. Georgia Aquarium and SeaWorld facilities in San Diego and San Antonio are now getting ready for their own arrivals.

Shedd might have room for six more of these white whales, but staff are focused entirely on the four newcomers first. "We are watching closely for the rescued belugas to eat a full diet, socialize with one another, and investigate the habitat," said Charlie Jacobsma, Shedd's director of animal behavior and training.

Early signs look promising. The whales are eating, exploring their new space, and staying close to each other. Dr. Karisa Tang, Shedd's lead veterinarian, calls this "the next chapter" for animals who lived too long in captivity to survive in the wild but deserved so much better than what they had.

Twenty-six more belugas are counting on what happens next.
