4 Hanford High Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists

Four seniors at Hanford High School in Richland, Washington just joined an elite club of fewer than 16,000 students nationwide named 2027 National Merit semifinalists.

Charles G. Bales, Zayd A. Rahman, Aiden Y. Wang, and Daniel W. Xiong represent the highest-scoring test takers in their state. These four students were the only ones from the entire Tri-Cities area to earn this recognition.

The achievement places them among less than 1% of all U.S. high school seniors. They earned their spots by excelling on the preliminary SAT test they took as juniors in 2025, competing against more than 1.2 million students across 20,000 high schools.

Now comes the real opportunity. These semifinalists will compete for 6,700 scholarships totaling about $24 million this spring. The awards range from $2,500 individual scholarships to full college-sponsored packages and corporate grants.

Getting to the finish line requires more than test scores. Each student must submit a detailed application showcasing their academic record, community involvement, leadership abilities, and accomplishments. A high school official will support each application with additional documentation.

Only about half of the semifinalists will ultimately become finalists in February, and even fewer will earn the coveted "Merit Scholar" title. The selection focuses on each student's potential for success in rigorous college studies, regardless of background.
