4-Year-Old Defies Odds After 50mph Crash, Brain Surgeries

When Cal McCallister lost control of his bicycle on a steep hill at his grandmother's Rock Falls home in May 2026, he rolled into the path of a car traveling 50 mph. The impact left the 4-year-old with a severe traumatic brain injury, bleeding, and swelling that threatened his life.

"Time is of the essence, especially with dealing with very sick patients," says Dr. Madhuradhar Chegondi, who treated Cal. "One of the key factors in this child's positive outcome was getting early to the right facility at the right time."

Cal's father Cory made the agonizing 15-minute drive to the hospital, saying "no" hundreds of times along the way. When he arrived, doctors told the family Cal might never walk, talk, or eat normally again.

Cal spent weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit fighting for his life. He underwent three craniectomies, surgeries that remove part of the skull to relieve dangerous pressure on the brain. At one point, Dr. Chegondi couldn't control the swelling no matter what procedures they tried.

Then Cal started surprising everyone. He began recognizing his parents, his favorite toys, and the things that made him uniquely Cal. His recovery accelerated beyond what anyone dared hope.

"The progress he has made is unreal," Cory says. "The severity of his injuries, he is doing better than we were told and what we expected. He is a miracle baby."
