4-Year-Old Nova Saves Grandma After Fall in Oregon

When her grandmother collapsed and started bleeding, 4-year-old Nova Hallett faced a moment that would terrify most adults. Instead of freezing, she became a hero.

On April 17 inside their Beaverton, Oregon apartment, Nova was spending time with her grandmother Charlene and baby brother when Charlene suddenly fell and hit her head. Disoriented and bleeding, Charlene needed immediate help.

Nova didn't hesitate. She ran outside the apartment and searched until she found a neighbor, urgently explaining that her grandmother had fallen and needed help.

That neighbor immediately called 911. When police officers arrived minutes later, they found Nova calm and focused, ready to help.

She led the first responders straight to her home, where the unlocked door gave them instant access to Charlene. Paramedics transported her grandmother to the hospital, where she spent about a week recovering before returning home safely.

Nova's mom, Haley Rose, struggled to process what her daughter had done. "What 4-year-old knows how to do that?" she said, recalling the overwhelming emotions when she learned about the rescue.

When the family told Nova that Grandma was getting help at the hospital, her response was pure confidence. "She said, 'Okay, I saved Grandma!' She felt really, really proud," Rose recalled.

Beaverton Police Officer Matt Henderson says Nova's pride is completely justified. "Nova demonstrated an incredible level of bravery and awareness, especially for someone so young," he explained.

Her ability to recognize an emergency, seek help, and guide first responders to her grandmother made a real difference in the outcome. The Beaverton Police Department plans to nominate Nova for a community life-saving award.

For a child barely out of toddlerhood, Nova showed wisdom that many adults would struggle to match in a crisis. She proved that heroes come in all sizes, even ones who probably still need help tying their shoes.
