Forty young basketball players from Lagos are heading to a free elite training camp in Ekiti State, where 10 will receive full scholarships. The program provides everything from Nike shoes to meals while teaching life skills alongside basketball fundamentals.

Forty teenagers just earned their shot at something bigger than basketball.

From 120 hopefuls who showed up at the Ilupeju basketball court in Lagos this Monday, 40 young players advanced to the fifth annual Ajayi Elebire Elite Basketball Camp. The stakes? Ten full scholarships await the most dedicated athletes when training wraps up in Ekiti State.

Olalekan Ajayi, a former basketball player, founded the program to find promising talent while giving kids opportunities they might never access otherwise. He moved the camp from Lagos to his home state of Ekiti last year to spotlight basketball development in an area that rarely gets national attention.

The selection process tested more than jump shots and layups. Coaches evaluated skills, athletic ability, and potential, looking for players who could grow with the right guidance and support.

What makes this camp remarkable isn't just the basketball training. Every participant receives free accommodation, meals, transportation, and basketball gear including Nike and Jordan shoes. For many families, these costs would put elite training completely out of reach.

Why This Inspires

Ajayi's vision extends far beyond the court. "We are an elite organization where we teach them about life and being good people," he explained. "Who you are as a person is more important to us. Basketball will take care of itself on the court."

The program emphasizes discipline, responsibility, dignity, and citizenship alongside dribbling drills and defensive strategies. It's preparing young people for life, whether they become professional athletes or not.

Former national team coach Scott Nnaji attended the screening and will work with the selected players over the next three days. He called grassroots development essential to growing Nigerian basketball and praised the sustained investment in young talent.

Scout Scott Adubato echoed that enthusiasm, impressed by both the quality of players and their determination. "This is a good one coming from Lekan, giving the kids an opportunity with the basketball camp," he said, adding that he was happy to contribute to basketball development in Nigeria.

The forty advancing players now face three intensive training days that could change their trajectories. For ten of them, those scholarships represent doors opening to futures they're still dreaming about.
