410-Pound Manatee Rescued from Florida Storm Drain

A 410-pound manatee is breathing easier today after multiple rescue teams freed him from a storm drain in Melbourne Beach, Florida.

The male sea cow was discovered Tuesday by a city surveyor checking storm drain improvements. He had wandered into what's called a baffle box, likely searching for warmer waters during a cold snap.

Vice Mayor Terry Cronin told local news that crews sprang into action immediately. Fire rescue units joined forces with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, University of Florida experts, and even a local wrecker service to carefully extract the trapped animal.

The coordinated effort paid off. Within hours, the manatee was safely transported to SeaWorld Orlando, where he's now receiving around-the-clock care in a medical pool.

SeaWorld spokesperson Stephanie Bechara shared encouraging updates about his condition. "He's breathing on his own, moving independently and showing interest in food," she said. The team is carefully adjusting water levels to support his buoyancy and comfort while he heals.

The Ripple Effect

This rescue represents more than one animal saved. It's part of a larger conservation success story that's quietly unfolding across Florida.

Manatees faced a devastating crisis in 2021 when more than 1,100 died, mostly from starvation. But coordinated protection efforts are working. Deaths dropped to 565 in 2024 and 555 in 2023, nearly cutting the crisis-year numbers in half.

SeaWorld Orlando alone rescued 56 manatees last year. They've already taken in seven this year, including this storm drain survivor. Each animal receives specialized care with one goal: returning them healthy to their ocean home.

The quick thinking of one surveyor doing routine work turned into a lifesaving moment. It shows how everyday awareness combined with expert response teams can make all the difference for Florida's beloved sea cows.
