440-Year-Old Coin Solves Lost Colony Mystery in Chile

A 440-year-old silver coin has just solved one of South America's enduring archaeological mysteries by pinpointing the precise location of a lost Spanish colony in Chile's Strait of Magellan. The discovery allows researchers to finally map out Ciudad del Rey Don Felipe, a settlement founded in 1584 that disappeared into history.

The coin, known as a "real de a ocho" or piece of eight, was unearthed by the Centro de Estudios Históricos y Humanidades during recent excavations. Minted during the reign of King Philip II of Spain, this silver currency was the standard payment for trade and military wages throughout the Spanish Empire.

Spanish explorer Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa established the colony in 1584 as part of Spain's effort to control the vital maritime passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. After English privateer Sir Francis Drake successfully navigated the strait, King Philip II commissioned Sarmiento to fortify the region and prevent further foreign access.

The expedition faced severe challenges from the start, with storms and shipwrecks reducing their numbers before they even arrived. Sarmiento founded two settlements, including Ciudad del Rey Don Felipe, before leaving to gather supplies and reinforcements.

Unfortunately, his ship was blown off course and he was captured by the English, leaving the colonists stranded. When English navigator Thomas Cavendish visited in 1587, he found only ruins and a handful of survivors, renaming the site "Port Famine" (Puerto del Hambre).
