45 Volunteers Beautify Downtown Lorain in Annual Sweep
Dozens of volunteers turned out on a Saturday morning to plant flowers, pull weeds, and remove litter across downtown Lorain, Ohio. The annual Big Sweep event brought together students, community groups, and residents for hours of hands-on beautification work.
When 45 volunteers showed up on a sunny Saturday morning in downtown Lorain, Ohio, they came armed with gloves, gardening tools, and a shared mission to make their community shine.
The annual Big Sweep event on May 16 transformed the downtown district as volunteers planted flowers, mulched tree beds, and cleared litter for several hours. Main Street Lorain organized the cleanup to coincide with Keep Lorain County Beautiful Day, a countywide initiative celebrating community improvement.
Volunteers met behind the United Way of Greater Lorain County before fanning out across downtown. Their work ranged from weeding and mowing to maintaining the "Lorain Blooms" project, which keeps planters and landscaping vibrant throughout the district.
The turnout included members of the Lorain International Princesses program, volunteers from American Legion Post 30 youth programs, and local high school students. Executive Director Max Schaefer said this marks the organization's biggest cleanup of the year, now in its fifth or sixth year running.
The Ripple Effect

Schaefer sees the event as more than just a facelift for downtown. Getting young people involved in community service early can shape how they engage with their community for life.
"Some of my first opportunities for community service were through volunteer opportunities with Key Club at Southview High School," Schaefer said. "From as early as you can, getting folks interested and involved in giving back, I think it just sets the tone for the rest of their lives."
The work doesn't stop with one big cleanup day. Main Street Lorain employs a beautification coordinator and hosts smaller "mini sweeps" throughout the year to maintain the downtown district.
The organization is already planning its next major volunteer push. In July, Main Street Lorain will launch an "America 250 Cleanup" event tied to the nation's 250th anniversary, with a goal of reaching 250 volunteer hours through multiple one-hour cleanup sessions.
Schaefer hopes the momentum spreads beyond downtown, pointing to the citywide Clean and Green League initiative as proof that community pride is growing across Lorain.
One Saturday morning, 45 volunteers, and a downtown that blooms a little brighter.
