47-Year-Old Dad Makes College Football Debut After 30 Years

Justin Buzzard stepped onto the football field at age 47, ready to play his first college football game after waiting 30 years for the chance.

The pastor and father of three had dreamed of playing college football when he enrolled at Whitworth College in Washington decades ago. But injuries kept him sidelined, and he eventually walked away from the sport entirely.

For three decades, Buzzard cheered from the sidelines as his three sons played football. He helped with their training and celebrated their athletic achievements while his own dreams stayed buried in the past.

Then his oldest son, Cru, said something unexpected: "Maybe you should play college football." Buzzard's first reaction was to dismiss the idea as ridiculous. But the thought wouldn't leave him alone.

He made a list of pros and cons about returning to the game. The pro list stretched on and on, while the con list had just one item: "What if I got hurt?"

Buzzard decided to chase the dream. San Jose City College gave him a spot on the team, and he committed to the same training requirements as every other player.

He gained 10 pounds of muscle preparing for the season. Head coach Jim Winkler made clear that Buzzard earned his position just like anyone else, meeting every requirement despite being twice the age of most teammates.

Beyond his physical preparation, Buzzard became a team leader. He led prayers, encouraged younger players, and brought a level of dedication that impressed everyone around him.

On August 29, with just over five minutes left in a game against College of the Redwoods, Buzzard finally heard his name called. He jogged onto the field as right defensive end for his first college football snap.

On his opening play, Buzzard beat his matchup against the opposing left tackle and pressured the quarterback. His effort helped create space for linebacker Kyler Headley to make a third-down sack.

Buzzard played just two snaps that afternoon. San Jose City College lost 41 to 21, but the score didn't matter to him.

His teammates celebrated him on the sideline. Players from the opposing team called him "the man of the hour" during the postgame handshake line.

Buzzard celebrated his 48th birthday on September 14, matching the number on his jersey. He continues training alongside his sons Hudson and Gus, who both play high school football.

His wife Taylor supports the journey, though she hopes he stays healthy enough to chase future grandchildren. "He is always thinking outside the box and blazing his own trail," she said.

Buzzard has no plans to hang up his cleats after just two plays. "So far, so good," he said. "But we're early innings here."
