4,757 People Form Record-Breaking Human Soccer Jersey

😊 Feel Good

Nearly 5,000 people in southern Mexico just created the world's largest human soccer jersey, crushing the previous record by more than 1,800 participants. It's the first of three World Cup record attempts building excitement before the tournament arrives this summer.

Picture 4,757 people standing shoulder to shoulder on a soccer field, arranged in the perfect shape of a giant jersey spanning nearly half a football field in every direction.

That's exactly what happened Friday in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of Chiapas state in southern Mexico. University students, high schoolers, and local residents gathered at Víctor Manuel Reyna stadium to form a massive 48-meter-wide by 35.5-meter-high jersey made entirely of human figures.

Volunteers handed out green, red, and white t-shirts representing Mexico's flag colors. Each shirt featured flags from all 32 Mexican states, symbolizing national unity as the country prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup this June.

Participants in the center held up slogans reading "Mexico is in style" and "Chiapas is extraordinary by nature," celebrating the state's stunning jungles, waterfalls, and lagoons. The crowd absolutely shattered the previous record of 2,891 people set by Bucaramanga, Colombia in 2018.

"It is a historic achievement for the state of Chiapas," said Alfredo Arista, the official Guinness World Records adjudicator for Mexico. He praised the event as a beautiful example of families and communities coming together to achieve something special.

The Ripple Effect

This record-breaking gathering kicks off Mexico's "Social World Cup" program, an initiative announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum last November. The program brings educational, tourism, and cultural activities to communities across the country in the months leading up to the tournament.

Two more record attempts are coming soon. On March 15, Mexico City will host what organizers hope will become the world's largest soccer practice. Then in May, communities will collaborate on a massive mural.

Chiapas Governor Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar, who attended the event, thanked President Sheinbaum for the opportunity to showcase his state on the world stage. The Tourism Ministry organized the gathering as part of efforts to highlight Mexico's diverse regions and natural beauty to the millions of visitors expected during the World Cup.

When thousands of people come together just for the joy of celebration and community, that's the beautiful game at its finest.
