New research from The Earthshot Prize and the University of Exeter identified 51 solutions capable of triggering "rapid and transformative change" over the next five years. The study pinpointed five priority areas where progress feeds on itself, costs drop with scale, and recovery becomes self-sustaining.
"For too long a sense has prevailed that solutions to the climate and nature are out of reach," the researchers note. "This new research explodes that myth once and for all."
The timing matters. August 2026 tied as the hottest month on record, and global temperatures are expected to exceed the 1.5°C Paris Agreement limit within years. Clean energy is leading the charge. Solar and wind power already crossed positive tipping points in many markets, accounting for a record 30 percent of EU electricity in 2025. That marked the first time renewables overtook fossil fuels in European power generation.
EU solar generation alone hit 369 terawatt-hours last year, up 20 percent from the year before. By 2030, solar power is projected to cut EU emissions by 154 million tonnes of CO2 annually, matching the Netherlands' entire 2023 carbon footprint.
The clean energy revolution unlocks electric vehicles, heat pumps, clean industry, and cleaner air simultaneously. Researchers call it a "master cascade" because one breakthrough triggers several others.

Progress is accelerating in unexpected places. Despite hosting 60 percent of the world's best solar resources, Africa receives less than two percent of global clean energy investment. That's changing fast as South Africa, Morocco, and Nigeria build domestic solar manufacturing capacity.
Morocco doubled production to one gigawatt annually. "A few years ago, local solar manufacturing was barely on the agenda anywhere in Africa," says Benjamin Clarke of the Africa Solar Industry Association. "It is now becoming a recognized pillar of industrial policy."
Clean cooking is approaching a similar tipping point. Around 2.1 billion people still rely on solid fuels that create dangerous indoor air pollution. Pay-as-you-go solar cooking businesses are now scaling rapidly across East and Southern Africa, bringing health benefits to millions.
Ocean protection is proving self-reinforcing too. Well-designed marine protected areas have produced visible recovery of fish stocks and biodiversity in recent years. As coastal communities reaped the benefits, protection areas expanded and progress accelerated.
The High Seas Treaty took effect earlier this year, protecting international waters covering almost 50 percent of Earth's surface. Once considered barren, these waters are now recognized as one of the planet's largest biodiversity reservoirs and crucial climate regulators.
The Ripple Effect
What makes these solutions special is how they feed on themselves. When solar panels get cheaper, more people install them. More installations drive manufacturing scale, which drops prices further. Communities protecting their coastlines see fish populations rebound, inspiring neighboring areas to do the same.
The researchers emphasize that we're not starting from zero. Multiple solutions have already crossed their tipping points in various markets. The challenge now is expanding grid infrastructure, reforming permits, and closing the clean energy investment gap in the Global South.
Progress is building on itself, and recovery is becoming self-propelling.
