5 Ebola Patients Recover as Congo Opens New Treatment Center

✨ Faith Restored

Five people have recovered from a rare strain of Ebola in eastern Congo, offering hope as health workers battle an outbreak with no approved vaccine. The wins come as the WHO opens a new treatment center in Bunia to expand care for affected communities.

Five patients walked out of an Ebola treatment facility in eastern Congo this week, alive and recovering from a virus strain that has no approved cure.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the recoveries Sunday during the opening of a new treatment center in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province. Four patients were discharged that day, with another released two days earlier.

"Of course, we're still working on vaccines and treatments, but that doesn't mean that people cannot recover from Ebola," Tedros told health workers and community members gathered at the facility.

The recoveries mark a turning point in the fight against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which differs from more common types. This was the first documented recovery of a confirmed Bundibugyo patient during the current outbreak.

The outbreak has affected 906 suspected cases with 223 suspected deaths across eastern Congo. Neighboring Uganda has confirmed nine cases and one death.

The Bright Side

Despite the challenges, doctors on the ground are seeing real reasons for optimism. Pierre Akilimali from Congo's National Institute of Public Health says symptomatic treatment is working better than expected.

"We truly have hope," said Dr. Davin Ambitapio at the treatment center. "The virus here is not as complicated as those we have dealt with in the past."

The new facility in Bunia expands access to care for people in affected regions. Health officials are urging anyone with symptoms to come forward early, when treatment has the best chance of success.

Community involvement has become central to the response. Tedros stressed that stopping the outbreak requires everyone's participation, not just medical professionals.

"If you come to health facilities when you have symptoms, you can get the support and recover," he explained. "The key is to come forward as early as possible."

The message from health workers is clear: this outbreak can be controlled, and patients can recover with proper care and community support.
