5-Year-Old Liam Returns Home After Judge Orders Release

Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos is back in Minnesota, ready to return to school after spending nearly two weeks in an immigration detention facility in Texas. A federal judge ordered his release along with his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, following an outcry over the detention of such a young child.

The boy and his father were detained on January 20 in a Minneapolis suburb. They were transported to a facility in Dilley, Texas, where they remained until Texas Representative Joaquin Castro personally escorted them home over the weekend.

The father, originally from Ecuador, has a pending asylum claim that allows him to remain in the United States while his case is processed, according to the family's lawyer.

In his release order, US District Judge Fred Biery criticized what he called "ill-conceived and incompetently-implemented government pursuit of daily deportation quotas, apparently even if it requires traumatizing children." The judge's sharp words reflected widespread concern about immigration enforcement practices affecting families.
