50 Rescuers Save Woman and Dog Stranded in Nevada River

A woman who plunged into Nevada's South Yuba River to save her dog got a second chance thanks to 50 first responders who refused to give up.

The rescue started on the evening of August 26 when a woman hiking near Emerald Pools with friends watched her dog fall into the rushing river. Without hesitation, she jumped in after her beloved pet.

The swift current swept them both downstream until they managed to climb onto a large boulder in the middle of the river canyon. A friend called 911 at 6:40 p.m., setting off one of the most complex rescue operations Nevada County had seen.

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office immediately deployed its Search and Rescue Drones Team. Flying over the treacherous terrain, the drones quickly spotted the woman and her dog clinging to their rocky refuge as water rushed past on all sides.

The location presented serious challenges. Steep canyon walls, difficult access points, and the woman's position in the middle of flowing water meant this would require every specialized skill available.

Teams from Nevada County Consolidated, Truckee Fire, CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit, and the U.S. Forest Service joined forces. The Nevada County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Ropes Team took the lead on the technical extraction.

Using a 300-foot rope system, a rescuer descended to the riverbed and reached the stranded pair. He checked the woman for injuries (she had only minor ones), gave her a personal flotation device, and secured the dog in a special harness.

The dog went up first, safely raised to the canyon rim by the rope team. Then the rescuer descended again to get the woman, fitting her with a climbing harness for the vertical journey.

The team hauled her up the cliff face, transitioning to a secondary rope system at the top. After four hours of careful, coordinated work, both the woman and her faithful dog stood on solid ground.
