50+ Volunteers Beautify Albuquerque Schools for Students

When students walk through the doors at Cibola High School and Manzano High School this fall, they'll see something powerful: proof that their community cares about their success.

More than 50 volunteers gathered on Saturday, August 8, for United Way of North Central New Mexico's Day of Caring initiative. Armed with paint brushes, gardening tools, and determination, they spent four hours beautifying both campuses ahead of the new school year.

The annual event connects corporate volunteers from across Albuquerque with local schools that need support. This year's focus targets campus improvements that create environments where students feel welcomed and ready to learn.

"Day of Caring connects local businesses and volunteers with schools to create environments where students can thrive," said Rodney Prunty, president and CEO of United Way of North Central New Mexico. The effort supports the organization's Youth Opportunity strategy, which partners with the Academies of Albuquerque to help students prepare for college and careers.

The Ripple Effect

When students see freshly painted walls, tended gardens, and restored outdoor spaces, they receive a message that goes beyond aesthetics. They learn that adults in their community believe they deserve beautiful, functional learning environments.

Research shows that school environment directly impacts student engagement and achievement. Clean, welcoming campuses help students feel valued and motivated to show up ready to learn.

The morning project, running from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., brought together volunteers from companies including Comcast and Groundworks. These corporate partners donated not just money but something more valuable: their time and hands-on effort.

For the volunteers, the work offers a tangible way to invest in the next generation. For the schools, it provides improvements that stretched budgets often can't accommodate.

The Day of Caring represents a simple but powerful truth: communities grow stronger when people show up for each other, especially for young people who are finding their way.
