50+ Volunteers Empty Hotel to Furnish Homes for Families

When the former Shilo Inn in Bend, Oregon got new owners, they decided every bed, table, and towel inside could change someone's life.

More than 50 volunteers arrived on August 14 to help move furniture from 100 hotel rooms into a new warehouse. The destination was Furnish Hope, a local nonprofit that helps people transitioning from homelessness or crisis situations into permanent housing.

Executive Director Megan Martin watched an army of helpers carry out bedside tables, coffee tables, dining chairs, microwaves, kitchen items, pillows, and towels. Even the small toiletries got packed up for Shepherd's House, a local shelter where those items are precious.

"You think about one room of that, you multiply it times 100, then you think about the space it requires," Martin said. The scale of the donation means dozens of families will walk into their new homes with everything they need to start over.

The Ripple Effect

This single hotel donation will furnish multiple homes for Central Oregon families. When someone escapes domestic violence, leaves addiction treatment, or ages out of foster care, they often face empty apartments with no resources to fill them.

Furnish Hope bridges that gap, turning hotel furniture into fresh starts. A coffee table becomes a place for kids to do homework. A bed means restful sleep after years of uncertainty. Kitchen supplies transform into family dinners.

The volunteers who showed up didn't just move furniture. They moved hope into homes where families are rebuilding their lives from scratch.

The work continues in a couple of weeks when construction on the hotel's roof wraps up and volunteers will empty the remaining rooms. For now, a warehouse full of furniture waits to become the foundation of new beginnings across Central Oregon.
