50+ Volunteers Honor Late Environmentalist at Beach Cleanup
More than 50 volunteers gathered in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to continue a beloved community member's mission of protecting the Gulf Coast. The annual cleanup doubled in size and is on track to collect over 471 pounds of trash.
When Alan Test was alive, he dedicated himself to protecting the Mississippi Gulf Coast beaches he loved. Three years after his passing, his legacy is growing stronger than ever.
More than 50 volunteers turned out Saturday morning for the third annual Alan Test Memorial Beach Cleanup at Fort Maurepas Park in Ocean Springs. Organized by the Rotary Club of Ocean Springs and Thalassas Sea Fans Cleanup Crew, the event has become a powerful tribute to a man who made environmental protection his life's work.
The turnout nearly doubled from last year's cleanup. Volunteers spent three hours combing the shoreline, collecting trash and debris that threatens local wildlife and water quality.
Last year, the team removed 471 pounds of waste from the beach. This year's haul is expected to be even larger thanks to the surge in participation.

"Last year we removed 471 pounds and this year I expect to remove even more than that," said Kelsey Flemming with the Thalassas Sea Fans Cleanup Crew. "We've had easily almost double the volunteers show up early this morning to get started."
The Ripple Effect
What started as a memorial to one passionate environmentalist has sparked a growing movement. Each year, more community members join the effort, showing that Test's commitment to protecting the coast continues to inspire action.
Sue Rokaw with the Rotary Club of Ocean Springs reflected on what the growing event means. "It's very special. I think he'd be happy, very happy to see this continuing."
The cleanup demonstrates how one person's dedication can create lasting change that extends far beyond their lifetime.
