50-Year-Old Footballer Inspires Millions on TikTok

When Craig Kirby's wife started filming his weekend football matches, they thought maybe a few family members would watch. Instead, his first TikTok video exploded to over a million views, and the 50-year-old midfielder from Rochdale hasn't looked back.

Kirby's highlight reels show something special: a white-haired personal trainer outpacing younger opponents on muddy park pitches across Lancashire. His pinned video, titled "Well beaten today. Not bad for 50 though," has racked up 2.9 million views and counting.

The posts aren't flashy or edited with fancy effects. They're just Lindsay filming from the touchline while her husband delivers clever passes and neat touches that remind commenters of Zinedine Zidane.

But there's a deeper story behind every game Kirby plays. In December 2023, his 20-year-old son Sebastian died by suicide while serving in the Royal Air Force in Norway. Kirby considered hanging up his boots forever.

Lindsay encouraged him to keep going. "I was going to retire because of it, and I thought I can't quit the game I love on grief," Kirby explains. "When I go on the pitch, it's about Seb."

The response to his videos has been overwhelmingly positive. For every joking comment, hundreds of people praise his technique and call him an inspiration for proving age is just a number.

Kirby had trials at Blackburn Rovers as a teenager but chose to follow his father into the army instead. When opportunities at Cambridge United and Kettering came later, none could support his young family financially.

Why This Inspires

Now at 50, Kirby says he's enjoying football more than he did in his 20s or 30s. He's even doing sprint training to get faster this season.

His viral fame has opened unexpected doors. He plays in the Cheshire Veterans League against teams featuring former professionals, has befriended ex-Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse, and young fans now recognize him at games and ask for his shirt.

Most meaningful of all: Kirby earned a call-up to England's over-50s team. He's played several friendlies and hopes to win his first official cap in Thailand later this year. "I do love my country and it's a real privilege to wear the kit," he says.

Kirby hopes his story encourages people his age who think they're "too old" to stay active. But he also wants young players to remember why they started: for the pure joy of the game. "Everyone should just be enjoying putting their boots on," he says.

Ninety-nine percent of the time Kirby feels good, though the grief is always there. On the pitch, though, he finds purpose, community, and a way to honor his son's memory while inspiring millions to lace up their own boots.
