Nigerian healthcare workers providing free eye examination to elderly patient in Osun State clinic

500+ in Nigeria Get Free Eye and Dental Surgeries

Faith Restored

Over 500 residents in Osun State, Nigeria are receiving free cataract surgeries, dental care, and corrective glasses through a partnership that's restoring sight and smiles. Among them, 150 people who couldn't afford surgery are now getting life-changing procedures at no cost.

Imagine walking into a clinic with pain and blurred vision, then walking out with the promise of seeing clearly again—all without paying a single naira.

That's exactly what's happening for over 500 people in Osun State, Nigeria, where health officials have launched a major medical outreach. The Osun Health Insurance Agency partnered with local Rotary clubs and the Rasaq Akindele Foundation to provide free eye and dental care to residents who couldn't otherwise afford treatment.

The numbers tell an incredible story. More than 300 people with eye problems and over 200 with dental issues received screenings. Now, 150 of them who need surgery are getting cataract and pterygium operations completely free.

Dr. Rasaq Akindele, Executive Secretary of the agency, said the idea came from heartbreaking visits to clinics and correctional centers. His team encountered elderly residents and young people struggling with sight challenges and severe dental problems, with no way to pay for help.

The outreach goes beyond surgery. Patients are receiving free corrective glasses, tooth extractions, and other dental services like scaling and polishing. A medical team is even visiting correctional centers to donate reusable sanitary pads to female inmates, supporting menstrual hygiene and dignity.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't Osun State's first rodeo with accessible healthcare. Earlier this year, over 42,000 students in public schools received free eye treatment through the Imole School Eye Health Programme. The state distributed free glasses, medication, and surgeries across six zones.

Governor Ademola Adeleke praised the initiative as proof of the government's commitment to reaching residents who face the biggest barriers to essential healthcare. His special adviser called it "a thoughtful intervention that promotes dignity, confidence and well-being."

Dr. Akindele challenged other wealthy Nigerians, companies, and government bodies to support similar programs. He's showing what's possible when public health agencies, nonprofits, and community organizations work together.

For the 500 people who came to those screening centers in pain, October 12 marked the beginning of something beautiful: hope restored, one surgery at a time.
