6 Rescued From Sinking Boat in Florida Storm
When a boat started sinking in choppy Florida waters during dangerous weather, rescuers and a Good Samaritan worked together to save all six passengers. Everyone made it to safety without serious injuries, just minutes before conditions worsened.
When six people found themselves aboard a sinking boat in the middle of East Lake Tohopekaliga, Florida, Saturday afternoon, their rescue became a race against time and weather.
The emergency call came in around 1 p.m. on May 2 as hazardous weather battered the lake. Winds gusted up to 25 mph, creating choppy waves that rocked the vessel as water poured in.
Video from the Osceola County Sheriff's Office shows passengers frantically putting on life vests and throwing items overboard to keep the boat afloat. The stern became completely submerged as waves crashed over the bow.
"They're about to take some water up all over the bow, and once that happens, I'm afraid it's going to go down quickly," one officer warned as conditions deteriorated.
The Sheriff's Aviation Unit spotted the vessel from above and guided surface crews through the rough waters. Deputies from the Ag Marine Unit, patrol teams, and the St. Cloud Police Department Marine Unit rushed to the scene.

A nearby boater saw the emergency unfolding and didn't hesitate to help. Working alongside professional rescuers, the Good Samaritan helped pull passengers to safety as some entered the water before crews could reach them.
All six people were rescued safely with no serious injuries reported. Just 25 minutes later, at 1:25 p.m., a severe thunderstorm rolled through the area, which could have made the rescue far more dangerous.
The Bright Side
This rescue shows what's possible when trained professionals and everyday people work together during emergencies. The Good Samaritan's willingness to help, combined with the coordinated response from multiple agencies, meant everyone went home safely that day.
The Sheriff's Office reminds boaters to check weather conditions before heading out on the water. A simple weather check can prevent emergencies and keep families safe during lake outings.
Six people are alive today because strangers showed up when it mattered most.
