60+ Volunteers Keep Carpinteria Seniors Mobile and Independent

Pat Kaiser has been volunteering with HELP of Carpinteria longer than anyone else, and she's part of a remarkable group of over 60 people who just got the recognition they deserve.

The organization recently threw a potluck barbecue at Lions Park to honor the volunteers who make it possible for seniors to stay independent when they can no longer drive. It's a simple mission with profound impact: provide rides so older adults don't have to choose between isolation and giving up their autonomy.

HELP volunteers drive seniors around Carpinteria and to medical appointments in Santa Barbara. The service costs just $2 for local roundtrips and $10 for trips to Santa Barbara, with slightly higher donations for those in outlying areas. These aren't just rides. They're lifelines to doctor visits, grocery stores, and social connections.

President Jessica Stovall leads a dedicated board of directors who keep the program running smoothly. Volunteers like Sandy Evans, Nola Nicklin, Roberta Christiansen, and Annie Sly donate their time because they understand what's at stake. When seniors can't drive, they often face a heartbreaking choice between becoming a burden to family or withdrawing from the world.

The celebration brought together the people who make this grassroots solution work. Dispatcher Lorien Rennie coordinates the rides while volunteers provide the wheels and the warmth.
