64-Year-Old Attempts Third Push-Up World Record Sunday
Holly Reese set two Guinness World Records for push-ups in an hour after recovering from a decade-long battle with autoimmune disease. Now at 64, she's attempting to reclaim her title with over 1,575 push-ups in Berkeley this Sunday.
At an age when many people struggle to get off the couch, Holly Reese is preparing to do more than 1,575 push-ups in 60 minutes.
The Pinole resident first set a Guinness World Record at 61 with 1,036 push-ups in an hour. Just six weeks later, she broke her own record with 1,207.
Now someone else holds the title, and Reese wants it back. On Sunday at Finnish Hall in Berkeley, the healthy aging coach will attempt her third world record at a free public event.
Her journey to this moment started in her 40s when a rare autoimmune disorder left her debilitated for a decade. "I learned what it felt like to be old," Reese says. "I was very much a stick figure at the end of that, but I built myself back."
That experience transformed her work. She now teaches older adults how to create healthy, active lifestyles, using her own story as proof that age doesn't have to limit your dreams.

When 59-year-old DonnaJean Wilde set a new record of 1,575 push-ups last September, Reese knew she had more to give. "It's always personal, not really against anyone else," she says. "I know I have more to put out, so I go for it."
Her training includes different types of push-ups, meditation, visualization, and nasal breathing techniques. The breathing work alone doubled her push-up count in training sessions.
Why This Inspires
Reese's attempt represents more than athletic achievement. Her clients are ecstatic about her record attempt, and she's become known as the "Lavender Legend" in San Francisco's LGBTQ+ community after performing demonstrations at Rikki's, a women's sports bar in the Castro.
A childhood dream to set a Guinness World Record finally came true at 61, proving that timing isn't everything. Her martial arts background taught her that "we can always do more than we think we can."
The path hasn't been smooth. At a May fundraiser, she bruised her ribs on a bar corner weeks before her attempt. But with rest, acupuncture, and herbal remedies, she recovered enough to complete an hour-long test session on her 64th birthday June 5.
"This has pushed me harder than anything I've ever done in my life," Reese says. Whether Sunday's attempt will be her last remains uncertain, but her message is clear: "Age is irrelevant. Never, ever give up on your dreams."
