65 Dogs Rescued From Apartment, Now Finding Forever Homes

Sixty-five dogs are getting a second chance at life after rescuers pulled them from a Newton Abbot apartment where conditions had become unbearable.

Margaret Green Animal Rescue took in the mix of chihuahuas, dachshunds, and poodles after their owner became completely overwhelmed. The dogs ranged from two-week-old puppies to adult dogs, many of whom had never felt grass beneath their paws.

The rescue wasn't easy. Staff needed smelling salts to handle the smell, and some puppies had such severe worm infestations that parasites were visible coming from their noses. Yet volunteers immediately got to work cleaning, vaccinating, and giving round-the-clock care to the most vulnerable pups.

The charity's CEO Nigel Mason explained what often leads to these situations. "People get a dog, they allow it to have puppies, and then it goes on and in the end you end up with 65 dogs and no way of being able to care for those dogs in the right way," he said.

The center worked with the RSPCA and dozens of volunteers to assess each dog's health. Some arrived frightened and traumatized, but none showed aggression despite what they'd endured.

What's remarkable isn't just the rescue itself but how quickly these dogs are bouncing back. Videos show pups experiencing grass for the first time, running around "like mad things" according to Mason. Within days of arrival, the once-terrified dogs began approaching staff and volunteers, tails wagging, ready to trust again.

The team at Margaret Green Animal Rescue has seen worse. Last year they handled a 198-dog rescue. But each animal matters, and this dedicated crew treats every case with the same urgency and care.

Most of the 65 dogs will be ready for adoption within a few weeks. After health checks, deworming treatments, and lots of love from volunteers, these resilient pups are already showing they're ready to become someone's beloved companion.

From a dark apartment where they'd never seen sunlight to running freely on grass, these dogs are living proof that it's never too late for a fresh start.
