7 Nigerian States Unite on 5-Year Security Blueprint

Governors across Nigeria's North-West region are taking an unprecedented step toward lasting peace by pooling their resources and strategies under one comprehensive plan.

The North-West Governors' Forum officially adopted a five-year blueprint designed to address security challenges, organized crime, and economic struggles affecting over 40 million people across seven states. The framework, covering 2026 to 2030, was launched at their third regional meeting in Abuja with support from the United Nations Development Programme.

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State, who chairs the forum, emphasized that scattered approaches haven't worked. "The framework provides our shared vision and clear priorities," he said. "We must now act with determination to translate this into tangible results for our people."

The plan includes strengthening regional coordination through a more structured secretariat, aligning budgets across states, and improving data collection for smarter decision-making. Two states, Katsina and Zamfara, have already started implementing policies to support internally displaced people, with other states now following their lead.

The governors also welcomed a federal innovation initiative called "Energise Commercialisation Now," designed to accelerate industrial development and create new economic opportunities. By integrating this program with their security framework, the states aim to address both safety and prosperity together.

This regional collaboration represents more than just policy coordination. When states share intelligence, resources, and best practices, communities become safer faster. Displaced families can return home. Markets can reopen. Children can go back to school without fear.

The framework tackles root causes by combining security measures with economic development, recognizing that lasting peace requires both protection and opportunity. Development partners and federal institutions participated in the planning, ensuring the framework reflects real needs on the ground.

The meeting participants reaffirmed their commitment to stronger collaboration and accelerated development across the entire North-West region. With technical support from international partners and buy-in from all seven states, this unified approach stands as the most comprehensive security strategy the region has seen.
