Jennifer MacDonell running the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in racing gear and bib number

70-Year-Old Runs Marathon World Record in 3:23:59

Hero Alert

Jennifer MacDonell of Ottawa just shattered the women's 70-74 marathon world record by over three minutes, finishing in 3:23:59. Even better: it capped an incredible eight-day stretch where she broke three age-group records.

At 70 years old, Jennifer MacDonell just proved that your best running might still be ahead of you.

On Sunday, the Ottawa runner crossed the finish line at the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 3:23:59, smashing the previous world record for women aged 70-74 by more than three minutes. The old mark of 3:27:00 was set just this year by France's Laurence Dupont Alnet.

But here's the truly remarkable part: MacDonell's world record was actually her third record in eight days. On October 9, she set a Canadian age-group mile record with a time of 6:51. The very next morning, she ran a 5K in 21:40 to claim another Canadian age-group record.

The final two kilometers in Toronto tested everything she had. MacDonell was battling a cramping calf and pushing against a strong headwind when she realized the world record was within reach.

"I was saying a mantra that Dory says in the Nemo movie: just keep swimming, just keep swimming," she told Canadian Running. She tucked behind fellow runners to shield herself from the wind, but kept passing people as she calculated whether she'd make it.

When the math added up, MacDonell started waving her hand with joy, still running. Thousands of spectators lined the course, cheering her by name (printed on her bib), giving her the energy she needed to push through.

Why This Inspires

MacDonell spent a full year preparing for this moment with her coach Steve Boyd and the marathon organizers. They positioned her with the elite runners at the start and invited her to all their pre-race meetings.

But what makes this story so powerful isn't just the preparation or the perfect 4-degree weather. It's that MacDonell approached an audacious goal with both serious dedication and pure joy. She wore a hydration vest and winter gear she peeled off as she warmed up. She thought of Dory from Finding Nemo. She forgot why strangers knew her name.

After crossing the finish line, race founder Alan Brookes recognized her achievement on stage. Her husband Norman, who had also run the race that day, arrived just in time to celebrate with her.

Now MacDonell is taking time to simply enjoy what she's accomplished. She plans to celebrate with donuts at SuzyQ Doughnuts in Ottawa before even thinking about her next goal.

At 70, she's not slowing down, she's setting the pace for what's possible.
