75-Year-Old Powers 50 Homes from Her Zero-Waste House

At 75, Janak Palta McGilligan pays zero rupees for electricity while her windmill powers an entire neighborhood in India.

Her journey to radical sustainability started with a teenage heart surgery that made her rethink everything. When she attended the first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, she saw the global environmental crisis and promised herself she'd be part of the solution.

After her husband Jimmy died in 2011, Janak moved to their home in Sanawadia village near Indore and got to work. She installed a windmill that now supplies electricity to nearly 50 neighboring houses at no cost to them.

Her property grows 13 different crops including rice, wheat, vegetables, and spices across 160 trees. She cooks exclusively with solar energy, and when clouds roll in, she burns bricks made from old newspapers instead of using gas.

Kitchen scraps become compost, and her home produces its own soaps, shampoos, detergents, and jams from natural ingredients. She hasn't generated household waste or an electricity bill in over a decade.

The Ripple Effect

Janak isn't keeping her methods to herself. Through the Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development and the Barli Development Institute for Rural Women, she's trained more than 180,000 people in solar cooking and sustainable living.

More than 6,000 rural and tribal women from over 1,000 villages have learned practical skills they can use immediately. Known as "Janak Didi" or the "Queen of Sustainability," she opens her home regularly to visitors, farmers, and students who want to see zero-waste living in action.

The Indian government recognized her impact in 2015 with a Padma Shri, one of the nation's highest civilian honors. Local officials now point to her home as a replicable model for sustainable development.

What started as one woman's promise to the planet has become a movement teaching thousands that off-grid, waste-free living isn't just possible but practical. Janak proves every day that you don't need to wait for governments or corporations to create the sustainable future you want to see.
