8 Nigerian Faith Leaders Freed After 21-Day Ordeal
Eight Christian youth workers kidnapped in Nigeria returned home safely after three weeks in captivity. Their release brings hope to families and communities affected by kidnapping in the region.
Eight leaders of Scripture Union Nigeria walked free on Sunday after spending 21 days in the hands of kidnappers, bringing relief to families who never stopped praying for their return.
The group was traveling home from a youth conference in Imo State on June 14 when gunmen stopped their vehicle on Orlu-Mgbidi Road. The eight included three women and five men, plus their driver, all heading back to Ibadan after leading programs at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe.
Scripture Union is a global Christian movement focused on mentoring young people through faith-based programs. The kidnapped leaders were national officers who had just finished training sessions for youth workers across Nigeria.
For three weeks, their colleagues and families held vigil. Willy Onu, the organization's national chairman, announced the joyful news in a statement on Tuesday, saying all eight returned "safe and healthy."

"With hearts full of immense relief and profound gratitude to Almighty God, we write to express our deepest appreciation for your unwavering support," Onu said. He credited the community's prayers and financial contributions with giving families strength during the ordeal.
The Bright Side
While kidnappings remain a serious challenge in parts of Nigeria, this story shows the power of community solidarity in crisis. The Scripture Union community rallied together, providing both spiritual and practical support to the families waiting at home.
Their collective action created a network of care that sustained everyone through uncertainty. Onu called the release "a testament to the power of collective prayer, resilience, and the sacrifices made by every member of the union."
The organization has not revealed whether ransom was paid, focusing instead on celebrating the safe return of their colleagues.
All eight leaders are now reunited with their families and receiving care as they recover from their experience.
