8 of World's Top 15 Cycling Routes Are in Europe

Cyclists looking for their next adventure just got scientific proof of what many already suspected: Europe is home to the world's most beautiful bike routes.

A groundbreaking study used eye-tracking technology to measure how 200 people responded to 52 of the world's most renowned cycling routes. The results? Eight of the top 15 are in Europe, proving the continent's landscapes are genuinely captivating.

The research, conducted by adventure booking platform Explore, measured how quickly each route caught viewers' attention and how long it held their gaze. These metrics combined into an "eye-catching" score out of 100, creating the first scientific ranking of cycling beauty.

Italy's Tuscany Gravel Routes claimed third place globally with a score of 91. Cyclists pedaling through this region pass cypress-lined climbs, working vineyards, and centuries-old hilltop towns that have captivated travelers for generations.

Germany's Elbe Cycle Route ranked fourth with a score of 90. The 1,220-kilometer path follows the Elbe River from Czechia to the North Sea, winding through Hamburg and offering a journey through historic cities and pristine countryside.

Amsterdam Cycle Route 10 landed in sixth place with a score of 86. The circular route showcases why the Netherlands and cycling are inseparable, guiding riders past iconic canals and historic neighborhoods before reaching quieter countryside.

France earned two spots in the top 15. The Provence Lavender Route (eighth place, 81 points) offers a gentler ride through rolling hills and purple blooms, best experienced when lavender plants peak in summer. The challenging Route des Grandes Alpes (13th place, 78 points) stretches from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean through spectacular Alpine scenery.

Scotland's North Coast 500 claimed 11th place with a score of 78. The 800-kilometer route starting and finishing in Inverness takes even experienced cyclists up to five days to complete, rewarding them with the rugged beauty of the Scottish coast.

The Ripple Effect

The surge in cycling tourism extends beyond just recreation. Interest in cycling holidays has exploded by 292% based on Google search trends, signaling a shift toward slower, more sustainable travel that allows people to genuinely connect with landscapes.

"There's something about seeing a country from the saddle that no other kind of travel can match," said Luke Judd, travel expert at Explore. "You're moving fast enough to cover real ground, but slow enough to take it all in."

The Lake Ohrid Circuit rounded out Europe's entries at 14th place with a score of 76. This 90-kilometer adventure crosses between North Macedonia and Albania, taking riders past historic towns and the Monastery of Saint Naum.
