Feel Good

For the first time in nearly 30 years, tigers are successfully raising cubs in Rajasthan’s Kailadevi Wildlife Sanctuary. Eight playful cubs mark a historic milestone for wildlife recovery across India.

Deep in the rocky ravines of Rajasthan, tiny pawprints are signaling a historic wildlife comeback. After nearly thirty years without a single recorded birth, eight energetic tiger cubs are officially thriving in Kailadevi Wildlife Sanctuary.

For three decades, adult tigers merely traveled through this 674-square-kilometer sanctuary without staying to raise their young. Now, a study from WWF-India and the Rajasthan Forest Department confirms three resident adults and eight healthy cubs roaming the forest.

Mother tigers require secure dens, pure water sources, and reliable food supplies to keep vulnerable newborns safe. The arrival of these healthy litters proves that Kailadevi once again offers everything a growing tiger family needs to survive.

Chief Wildlife Warden K C A Arun Prasad noted that this milestone provides immense hope for establishing a permanent breeding population beyond Ranthambore. Kailadevi is quickly emerging as an essential sanctuary in the long-term conservation of wild tigers.

To assess the woodland habitat, researchers deployed 186 camera stations across the sanctuary between late 2023 and early 2024. The motion-triggered cameras documented 27 mammal species sharing the rocky landscape with the big cats.

Footage revealed healthy prey populations alongside 29 individual leopards, striped hyenas, wolves, and rare caracals. These thriving numbers demonstrate that the entire forest food web is bouncing back in harmony.

The Ripple Effect

The positive impact extends far beyond the wild borders of the reserve. Conservation programs have introduced clean energy and livelihood training to nearly 8,000 residents across 46 surrounding villages.

Empowering these communities reduces the everyday pressure on natural resources while turning neighbors into dedicated forest protectors. As local stewardship grows, Kailadevi provides a vital bridge connecting Ranthambore to other major national parks.

This open pathway ensures future generations of tigers have room to roam, hunt, and find mates without conflict.

With each new cub exploring the forest, Rajasthan shows the world that patient conservation can restore even the quietest wilderness.
