8-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Named 2026 Bionic Bitty Babe

When 8-year-old Lily Zataar opened her front door on January 24, two girls in sparkling gold costumes stood on her doorstep with life-changing news. She had been chosen as the 2026 Bionic Bitty Babe, joining the Bionic Babes dance team for a year of parades, appearances, and celebration.

Three years ago, doctors diagnosed Lily with medulloblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor that primarily affects children. She endured surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments that temporarily dimmed the fierce independence her mom, Nora Rountree, says defined her daughter.

Today, Lily is in rehabilitation and well on her way to recovery. When her mom tried to help her into her new gold costume that Saturday, Lily's old spark returned. "I can do this myself!" she insisted.

The Bionic Babes, Dancers of Hope, brings together cancer survivors, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and supporters who dance in Mardi Gras parades and community events across Louisiana. Gina Pausina Cherry, a cancer survivor and fitness instructor, founded the group in 2022 to pay forward her own successful recovery.

Three years ago, Cherry launched the Bitty Bionic Babe program to spotlight childhood cancer. Each year, the team selects one child who is actively fighting cancer or in remission to reign alongside them.

Zoey Tyrney, the 2025 Bitty Babe, and Juliana Cotton, who held the title in 2024, personally delivered the news to Lily. They taught her dance moves right there in her doorway, welcoming her into a sisterhood of survivors who refuse to let cancer define them.

Lily has already completed her first television interview and will ride in a convertible during the Krewe of Carrollton parade this year. When asked how she feels about her new role, her response captures everything beautiful about childhood resilience: "Good! I was on TV! I'm gonna be in a parade!"

Her mom says Lily now loves putting on her costume and admiring herself in the mirror. That simple act of a little girl feeling special, beautiful, and celebrated speaks to the heart of what the Bionic Babes accomplish beyond the dance steps and parade routes.

The Babes recently partnered with Camp Challenge, a summer camp for children with blood disorders and their siblings. Through healthy habits, exercise, and community support, they're creating ripples of hope that extend far beyond Mardi Gras season.
