81-Year-Old Widower Finds Joy at Georgia Senior Community
After 60 years of marriage and a cross-country move, Vietnam veteran Lloyd Glenn Whiteman discovered an unexpected second chapter filled with friendship and purpose. His fellow residents just voted him their official welcome ambassador.
Lloyd Glenn Whiteman spent 81 years in Western Maryland before moving to Statesboro, Georgia, but his biggest leap came this past July. Four years after losing his wife Nellie Anne following six decades together, the 84-year-old veteran decided to embrace community living at The Lodge at Bethany.
Glenn served 11 years in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and worked 33 years at Goodyear Tire. But when asked about his greatest achievement, he doesn't mention his service or career.
"Raising my children to be loving and kind adults and watching them become successful in their lives," he says without hesitation. He's the proud father of two and grandfather of five.
The transition to senior living could feel daunting for anyone, especially after losing a spouse. Glenn admits he was looking to downsize and build new relationships after Nellie Anne's passing.
What he found exceeded every expectation. "I love living here," Glenn says with a laugh. "They are so nice and do everything for me. No negatives; it's like Chick-fil-Aon steroids!"

His enthusiasm caught the attention of fellow residents, who recently elected him as a Resident Ambassador. The role involves welcoming newcomers and helping them settle in, something Glenn does naturally.
"He is always thinking of others and has such a kind soul," says Jerri Mathis, the community's Engagement Director. "He is definitely an asset to Bethany."
Sunny's Take
Glenn still drives his own car, visits local restaurants, and stays actively involved with his family in Statesboro and Tennessee. The man who once worried about downsizing now spends his days making others feel at home.
It's a beautiful reminder that new chapters can begin at any age. Sometimes the best way to heal is by helping others feel welcome in their own journey.
His late wife Nellie Anne loved gathering family and friends for celebrations, a tradition Glenn continues in his new community.
Welcome home, Glenn.
